The Battle of Crogen

slide5

From the early Bronze age, mankind has been here. The Romans marched through on their way to conquest and glory. The formation of England itself can be read into the building of Offa's Dyke - and subsequently the formation of Wales. In the Borderlands here there was much to win and lose. Bloody battles were fought here along the Norman Marches and later Medieval power struggles.

Much good too, as elsewhere, the peace and tranquility of this area has been built onto layers and layers of history.

The photo above is of our local re-enactment group, Cwmwd Ial at the unveiling of the plaque at Pontricket.

Their Facebook page is here for more information.

And information about the (local) Battle of Crogen can be found here.

And don't worry! - the valley is thoroughly civilised nowadays!
